ISC Newsletter - Jun 07

This issue I decided to look across the Mediterranean sea to Spain's marble-producing region. Spanish stone is widely used in America, Europe and the Middle East and ISC has contacts direct with the Spanish quarries. I am highlighting some of the most popular Spanish materials.

In this issue...
* Crema Marfil
* Rojo Alicante
* Emperador Dark
* Negro Marquina

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rojo Alicante
Rojo Alicante is a fine-grained, yellow-red, brown-red
to intensive red micritic limestone of the Eocene
period, with two generations of white calcite veins.
Technical Data
Density :2,70 - 2,71 kg/dm³
Apparent Porosity : 0,1 - 0,27 %
Compressive Strength : 84,0 - 94,67 N/mm²
Flexural Strength : 8,73 - 12,4 N/mm²
Polish constant only inside.
Uses: Ornamental stone inside.
Emperador Dark
Also called Emperador Marron or Emperador Oscuro,
this limestone of the Miocene period is prized for its
rich chocolate color and contrasting small and large
white calcite veins. It is commonly referred to as
marble due to its ability to be polished.
Technical Data
Density : 2,65 kg/dm³
Apparent Porosity : 1,0 vol.-%
Compressive Strength : 156,6 N/mm²
Flexural Strength : 20,6 N/mm²
Not frost resistant. Polish constant only inside.
Uses: Ornamental stone.
Negro Marquina
Negro Marquina a.k.a. Nero Marquina is a black
limestone of the Carboniferous period, with white
calcite veins and fossil fragments ( rudistes and
corals ). It is also typically referred to as a marble
since it is dense enough to be polished.
Technical Data
Density : 2,680 - 2,710 kg/dm³
Apparent Porosity : 0,17 - 0,22 weight-%
Compressive Strength : 111,83 - 115,76 N/mm²
Flexural Strength : 13,44 - 13,93 N/mm²
Frost resistant. Polish constant only inside.
Uses: Ornamental stone inside, low hardness, it's not
advisible to use polished tiles for flooring.
Crema Marfil
Crema Marfil is widely appreciated for its neutral
cream tonality and its low variation rate. It is a beige
oolitic limestone of the Eocene period, with many
fossil fragments (foraminifera + echinoderma), often
considered a marble since it can be polished.
Technical Data
Density : 2,70 - 2,72 kg/dm³
Apparent Porosity : 0,15 - 0,50 %
Compressive Strength : 96,7 - 162 N/mm² (the
suppliers's informations are wide-spread!)
Flexural Strength : 19,4 - 19,4 N/mm²
Frost resistant, polish constant only inside.
Uses: Ornamental stone in- and outside.
